NSB AS is one of Norway's most important transport companies, with traditions going back to the opening of the first railway in Norway in 1854.

The NSB Group's main activities comprise passenger traffic on trains and buses and rail freight traffic. The Group consists of a number of wholly owned and partly owned subsidiaries.

Nettbuss AS and ROM Eiendomsutvikling AS are two of the wholly owned companies.

NSB owns 55 per cent of CargoNet AS, a freight company in which Swedish GreenCargo AB is the other shareholder.

NSB BA was converted into a private limited company (AS) on 1 July 2002. It was originally established by special legislation on 1 December 1996, when the administrative body - the Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket) - was spun off from the former NSB.

NSB AS is owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications.
